    Description

You're bidding on an antique, circa 1893 triptych set of Japanese woodblock prints, by artist
    Toyohara Kunichika
    - they depict a scene from
"Shiobara Tasuke Ichidaiki", a popular "rags-to-riches" drama of the late 19th century - print depicts period actor
Onoe Kikugoro in character, and so probably commemorates the staging of the production in 1892 at Tokyo's famous Kabuzika Theatre.
Kunichika (1835-1900) was one of the last Ukiyo-e
period artists to carry forward the tradition, and is especially regarded for his depictions of Kabuki theatre and actors. A quite nice example, and appears rare to find - I was only able to locate other examples in the collection of the Edo-Tokyo Museum.
Note some issues of condition - each panel is individually matted down at the corners to a backing sheet - panel one does have a couple of spots/stains within the image, and all three have some some bleed/stain in spots at the edges as well as some light matting burn. Paper exhibits some wrinkle. I did not photograph the back sides due to the glue at the corners, but there is dark strong bleed-thru on the back sides. Each individual print is about 9 1/2" X 14 1/2" - note that they are close-cropped to the image area with some margin loss.
Please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don't hesitate to ask any questions prior to bidding - thanks for looking!
