    Description

This is a woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro. The title given on the back of the frame is "A Summer Evening," but you can find this print elsewhere under other titles, including "Woman Sitting on Edge of Veranda." The image is of a young woman relaxing on a bench in a blue kimono with delicate flowers, a fan in one hand. To her right are a tobacco pipe and case, and a bowl. Barely seen through the window blind behind her is a bamboo plant. She is sitting with one knee up, with a bare foot. The sandal below her has been discarded next to her other sandaled foot. The print is mounted on a gold foil frame, behind which is silk fabric in pale teal, textured with gray flowers and filligree.
A collector has told me this is likely a re-carved version of the original print. For provenance purposes, it was found in 1973 in the home of Constance Huntington Hall (1886-1973), daughter of Edwin Herbert Hall, physics professor at Harvard University (notable for discovering the "Hall Effect"). This history is hand-written on the back of the painting by my grandmother, Constance's cousin. Also on the back of the painting is the title of the piece, and a label from the establishment that framed it (perhaps it was also purchased here). The label reads: "K. HAYASHI. Antique and Modern Colour Prints, Water Coloured Pictures, Photographs and Place Cards. ARTISTIC FRAMING OUR SPECIALTY. No. 14, Motokago-machi, NAGASAKI, JAPAN."
The print will be shipped in its frame and double-wrapped to ensure it arrives safely.
