Only 20,000 silver dollars were struck at San Francisco in 1859, these being the first examples of the denomination struck on the West Coast. The present example displays satiny, well-detailed surfaces with mottled pewter-gray patina. A popular sought-after No Motto branch mint issue.
Struck from a late die state, with repunching at the base of 1 and 8 in the date removed by die lapping. A faint die crack at the base of the date signifies the late obverse die stage, while several reverse die cracks surround the reverse legend and connect leaves 1 and 2. Plated in the Osburn-Cushing Register of Die Varieties.
