    Description

1500's to 1600's Pirate coin from
    SPANISH EMPIRE
COIN # 263 EE  The coins of this period were crudely made by hand hammering on any copper planchet available at the time. This process produced coins of various sizes, thickness, with variations like splits and cracks, off center strikes, clipped edges, missing details, weak or heavy impressions and so on.
This particular coin is slightly smaller than US quarter.
We were granted  permission to hunt a private property near the water, which was reputed to be a landing spot by a group of local pirates, as well as a small sugar or coffee plantation. We found a large number of coins all dating from the 1500 -1600s. These were mostly Spanish, English, French, Dutch and various other nationalities. As pirates of the period looted ships from just about any nation, the coins reflected this. At that time coins in history, the worth of a coin was in the metal they contained in weight, not the nationality of the coin. Because of this, any type of coin would be used in transaction regardless of provenance.  Have fun researching these pieces of history. Small denomination copper coin. A lot of detail visible for coins 400 to 500 years old. Coins of this era are normally heavily worn with little visible details, as coinage was in short supply, leaving this coins in circulation for very long time causing extensive wear.
